Hobby supplies arrived today with the pro-acryl 1step medium and a chrome paint. I like to keep the mediums paired with the speed/contrast style paints as they all behave a bit differently and a test I did with the green I’m using for my dark angels covered a bit too well when I used it neat.
The initial experiment went well. As always with these paints I’m not quite happy with how it went over the larger panels, but thinning it has left a bit of the highlights more intact and I think it’ll work well for my Dark Angels going forwards. I can’t get enthusiastic enough about space marines to put that much effort into them, but a nice enough looking army is always a nice looking army.
The chrome paint is AK Super Chrome and I’m always chasing that nice chrome look. A quick test makes me think it could work really well, but the problem with chrome paints is that they need a super good basecoat. Like all metalics a gloss base works best and chrome will show every single slight bump if the surface isn’t super smooth. I slapped some onto a piece I had sitting around, a bit of scatter from GW that I had sprayed with a dark silver that isn’t GW so imagine a slightly better spray can application. Not exactly smooth but not terrible. The results were pretty good and if I had hit it with a gloss varnish first I imagine it would be even better. I’m not entirely sure what I’ll use it for but it’ll be good for the odd thing like mirrors and random model kits. I imagine some UV resin filling a recessed area and then painted with it would look fantastic assuming the paint can stick to something that smooth. I’ll have to have a play when I get bored next.
